Just Write on Whidbey is a website for writers and writing groups on the island to share upcoming events and meetings.
This is a free website which has been set up to thank Andrea Hurst for founding the wonderful “Just Write” group in Coupeville, an invaluable and magical place to meet and share ideas and resources with fellow writers.
Writing can be one of the most rewarding pursuits but it’s a solitary pastime. This website is a place for writers to connect and meet, no matter their location on this wonderful island.

Guest Speaker at Just Write on the Pier with Andrea Hurst
Mini Class: Jump-Start a Short Story with These Techniques: We’ll discuss: what is a short story? What are its basic elements? How long should it be and what type of a structure should it have? What holds it together? We’ll delve into clues to an effective beginning by studying published examples. We’ll provide tips on going forward. If time allows, we’ll do a short, fun class exercise.
BIO: Bharti Kirchner is the author of eight books—four novels and four cookbooks and hundreds of short pieces. Her novels include Pastries: A Novel of Desserts and Discoveries, Darjeeling, Sharmila’s Book, and Shiva Dancing and cookbooks include Indian Inspired and The Bold Vegetarian. A Contributing Editor for The Writer, Bharti has also written and essays on food, travel, fitness, and lifestyle in magazines that include Food & Wine, Eating Well, Vegetarian Times, Writer’s Digest, Fitness Plus, and Northwest Travel, and book reviews for newspapers. Her essays have appeared in eight anthologies. Bharti has won two Seattle Arts Commission literature grants, and an Artist Trust GAP grant. She teaches at writer’s conferences nationwide.

Renda Dodge – Guest Speaker at “Just Write on the Pier” 15th June
Renda Dodge is the author of Inked and The Indie Writer’s Workshop (August 2011).
She is the Managing Editor of Line Zero, a quarterly indie arts and writing journal, and independent publishing company – Pink Fish Press.
Renda regularly runs workshops on fiction plotting, drafting and independent publishing. For the past seven years she has been involved in National Novel Writing Month and for the past five has been a Municipal Liaison in the Seattle area, working with and encouraging writers of all ages and skill sets.
Topic: The Creative Process of Publishing — Finding balance between product and art in independent and small publishing. Renda will talk about why she chose the indie path, why she created Line Zero, and what drives her as a publisher and writer.

Just Write has a new guest speaker on the 8th September; Corbin Lewars, Seattle author and writing mentor, will be speaking about how to persevere through rejection letters, discouraging markets and weak economies.
Corbin Lewars (www.corbinlewars.com) is an editor, writing instructor, author, and mother of two. Her memoir, Creating a Life has been nominated for the 2011 PNBA and tells the story of Corbin’s road to becoming a writer and mother. Her novel Swings is out for submission and she is currently at work on another memoir entitled After Glow.
Corbin is the founder of the zine Reality Mom, which has an international following and is in it’s eighth year of publishing. Her essays have been featured in Mothering, Hip Mama, Midwifery Today, A Wild Ride, Stories with Grace, and numerous of other publications. She was the editor of Verve, a Seattle women’s magazine, and Mamaphiles 3, an anthology of mother writers. She has taught at Shoreline Community College, North Seattle Community College, Antioch University, Richard Hugo House and in Seattle public schools.

Janna Cawrse Esarey will be speaking at this weeks Just Write in Coupeville. Janna is the author of The Motion of the Ocean: 1 Small Boat, 2 Average Lovers, and a Woman’s Search for the Meaning of Wife (Touchstone 2009), the true story of a woman who chases love across the Pacific, only to find that navigating the world is easier than keeping her relationship off the rocks.
Janna’s work appears in sailing magazines, such as Sail and Cruising World, and travel anthologies, most recently More Sand in My Bra. She also blogs about married life for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer at “Happily Even After”: http://blog.seattlepi.com/happilyevenafter
Janna was selected as a 2008 Jack Straw Writer and currently performs the juggling act of writer, mom, and wife—only dropping a few balls daily.
